Plot

A little girl is playing a game of ‘invasion’ in the yard with some of her friends, while her father is at work and her mother is in the house doing housework. She rejects the older kids from playing with her because they only make fun of her. At lunchtime she describes her game to her mother, saying that she has a friend named Drill, a space alien, whose people wanted to invade Earth, but who could not find a way until they thought of using children to help them infiltrate Earth’s defenses. They expect to arrive at 5 o’clock. Drill promises the child that kids will run things when they come, and the world will be a more kid-friendly planet. The mother assumes, of course, that Drill is an imaginary friend, but she gets nervous after talking to a friend in another city, when she learns that her friend’s child is also playing the game ‘invasion’. The husband comes home from work at 5 o’clock, says "hello" to his daughter playing in the yard, and comes in the house to talk to his wife. Suddenly, the woman hears a number of explosions off in the distance. She panics, and takes her husband up to the attic, where she locks the door. They hear their daughter’s voice calling for them from downstairs, accompanied by many footsteps, which sound much too heavy. Then they hear their daughter on the other side of the attic door. The doorknob melts and falls away; the door opens, and their daughter steps in, saying, “Peek-a-boo.”

After The Sound and the Fury was published, in September 1929, Faulkner tried to make good on his decade-long boast. His instructor's wife remembered that, at the time of the stock market crash, he was surreptitiously but unsuccessfully taking flying lessons at the Memphis airport. Illustrating his maxim about writing instead of doing, he cashed in on the current vogue for aviation fiction in stories that were based supposedly on his own experience but actually on Mack Glider's exploits.

In 1933 Faulkner again took secretive, prolonged, and at last successful flying lessons. Having written about the seamy side of Memphis in Sanctuary, however, he had lost his anonymity. With the press speculating about Prohibition's repeal, in late March the Commercial Appeal also announced "Recovery of Lost Nerve Is Author's Aim"; the subtitle was "Faulkner, War Flier, Seeks to Use His Wings Once More."

Meanwhile, the "stabbed in the back" theory fermented, fueling German chauvinism and paranoia and laying the groundwork for Adolf Hitler's rise to power.

Faulkner expunged most "war flier" stories from his biography. Against Hitler, however, he found the heroic myth again irresistible. When his nephew became an aviation cadet, Faulkner wrote him: "I would have liked for you to have had my dog-tag, RAF, but I lost it in Europe, in Germany. I think the Gestapo has it; I am very likely on their records right now as a dead British flying officer-spy."

Sherman was a believer in total war. He said that the Northern military was "not only fighting hostile armies, but a hostile people, and must make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war."

As the United States began to gear up for a major war, information and propaganda efforts were set in motion. Civilians (including children) were encouraged to take part in fat, grease and scrap metal collection drives. Factories making non-essential goods retooled for war production. Workers commonly worked 60 to 80 hour weeks; as much as double the normal shift load.

These propaganda campaigns affected the United States in other ways as well. The belief that Americans had been tricked into participating in the first world war delayed U.S. intervention in the second. Moreover, news of Nazi atrocities connected to the Holocaust were greeted incredulously by the American public in part because of the exaggerated and fabricated atrocity propaganda released by the British two decades earlier.

Sherman realized that the Southern civilian population provided most of the supplies that Confederate forces needed to wage war against the North. To speed the defeat of the Confederacy, Northern forces needed to prevent Southern civilians from supplying their armies. The Northern military needed to wage war against both the Confederate military and Southern civilians.

If one opts for one of these two alternatives, the solution of passive autoaggression is far more common. The probability that a man in Germany will run amok is around 1 million to 1, while for women the probability is 20 million to 1. Running amok is a male-hegemonial problem. [note: In the German-speaking world, the expression amoklaufen (to run amok) is used exclusively in the context of violent incidents like the one described above.

It was on 11 September 2001, of all days. On the day that more than 3,000 people died in New York as the result of a terrorist attack, a young man in Erfurt (Germany) finally received his long awaited sport shooting license. His name: Robert Steinhäuser. Only a few months later the nineteen-year-old would achieve woeful fame: on 26 April 2002 he shot dead twelve teachers, two pupils and a police officer at his former school in Erfurt. This was the worst shooting rampage in Germany since 1945.

Strict systems of rationing were introduced, most colleges were closed, and youth were encouraged to put high school on hold until the end of the war. Levels of industrial productivity previously unheard of were attained during the war; multi-thousand-ton convoy ships were routinely built in a few days and tanks poured out of the former automobile factories. Within a few years of the U.S. entry into the Second World War, nearly every man fit for service, between 18 and 30, had been conscripted into the military "for the duration" of the conflict.

Previously untouched sections of the nation mobilized for the war effort. Academics became technocrats; home-makers became bomb-makers (massive numbers of women worked in heavy industry during the war); union leaders and businessmen became commanders in the massive armies of production. The great scientific communities of the United States were mobilized as never before, and mathematicians, doctors, engineers, and chemists turned their minds to the problems ahead of them. By the war's end a multitude of advances had been made in medicine, physics, engineering, and the other sciences. Even the theoretical physicists whose theories were not believed to have military applications were invited to the Western deserts to work there on military projects.

Sherman left Atlanta with his sixty-two-thousand-man army on November 15, 1864. As the Northerners began their 285-mile march south and east to Savannah, Hood led his Confederate army on a raid into Tennessee. As a result of Hood's action, fewer than five thousand Confederate soldiers under General Joseph Wheeler stood between Sherman's army and Savannah.

Total Defence (Chinese: 全民防卫; Malay: Pertahanan Mutlak; Tamil: --) is a concept introduced by the government of Singapore in 1984 to improve readiness in matters related to the defence and national security of Singapore, and is partly based on similar concepts in Switzerland, Denmark, Estonia and Sweden. In fact, the concept has very close similarities (including the “five aspects of Total Defence”, discussed below) to the 1972 adopted Total Defence concept in Austria. This concept rests on the notion that the defence of the country cannot rely only on the regular armed forces. Thus the concept declares that government agencies, private sector organisations and all Singaporeans are to be involved in an effort to deal with security threats facing Singapore. It can be compared to the concept of total war.

Total war is a conflict of unlimited scope in which a belligerent engages in a total mobilization of all available resources at their disposal, whether human, industrial, agricultural, military, natural, technological, or otherwise, in order to entirely destroy or render beyond use their rival's capacity to continue resistance. The practice of total war has been in use for centuries, but it was only in the middle to late 19th century that total war was identified by scholars as a separate class of warfare. In a total war, there is less differentiation between combatants and non-combatants (civilians) than in other conflicts, as nearly every person from a particular country, civilians and soldiers alike, can be considered to be part of this belligerent war effort.

Bridge financing is a method of financing, used to maintain liquidity while waiting for an anticipated and reasonably expected inflow of cash. Bridge financing is commonly used when the cash flow from a sale of an asset is expected after the cash outlay for the purchase of an asset. Bridge financing covers the 60 day gap in cash flows.

Another type of bridge financing is used by companies before their initial public offering, to obtain necessary cash for the maintenance of operations. These funds are usually supplied by the investment bank underwriting the new issue. As payment, the company acquiring the bridge financing will give a number of stock at a discount of the issue price to the underwriters that equally offsets the loan. Bridge financing may also be provided by banks underwriting an offering of bonds. There are 2 types of bridging finance. Closed bridging and Open Bridging.

Open bridging is higher risk for the lender. This is where the borrower hasn't got an exact date for the bridging finance exit and may be looking for a buyer of the property or land.
